Blue Cheese

I think I have all of the blocks made for Blue Cheese and I have started making and adding the border sections to the outer blocks before joining everything together. This is what Blue Cheese looked like last Tuesday evening and I was feeling quite pleased with my progress. I figured I would have the top completed within a couple days.

However....I was feeling a bit scratchy in my throat and I was starting to cough and I had no idea that I was going to be out of commission for a week. I have spent pretty much the whole week in bed with the flu.

You know, I was contemplating getting the flu shot this year and my husband was quite insistent that I get it because the flu was supposed to be really bad this year but I decided not to. Right now I really regret that decision and I will get the shot next year. I have lost a whole week of my life and I am still not fully recovered.  Yesterday and today I am up and about the house trying to get my energy back but I am still not back to full strength. Thankfully, I am not working so I do have time to recover and get back into the swing of things in my own time.

Thankfully, piecing quilts is not a strenuous activity so I hope to be back showing some more progress on Blue Cheese and maybe even the finished top over the next few days.

I Did Good! :)

I have added the sashing and my Ugly Christmas Sweater quilt blocks have turned into a top. I think it turned out so cute! I won't call it a finished flimsy yet because I still want to add borders. I haven't decided on the border design so I packed the top and all of the extra fabric pieces back into the project box and it will stay there until I can decide what I want to do. Hopefully, I will make a decision quickly!

Over the past couple weeks I had spent quite a considerable amount of time tidying up my sewing room and putting away a lot of 'stuff'. I am so happy that I managed to keep with my resolve to tidy up as soon as I am done with something. I even turned these leftover stitch and flip corners into 2.5" bonus hsts and put them back in the project box as well. I don't know if I will need them for this quilt but I will keep it all together until I am completely finished. I am sure that staying organized will save me hours of rummaging around in my room trying to find something. :)

This is where I left off  at the end of November.
Next up to be worked on is my Blue Cheese quilt and I have pulled out the project box in anticipation of digging in. I think I only need to make the border sections to be able to finish it off.

My long arm is supposed to come back to me tomorrow. We will see if that happens because we are expecting freezing rain in our area overnight and into tomorrow and it may delay the delivery.

Ugly Christmas Sweater Blocks

Yesterday I did a marathon sewing session and I got the last blocks finished for the Ugly Christmas Sweater quilt. I think they all turned out great!

The next thing to do is to add the sashing and turn the blocks into a quilt top. Lorna from Sew Fresh Quilts designed this quilt and she used a very simple border and it does look good. I have been thinking about my border and I may want to make mine a little more substantial. I have to try out a few options before I make a final decision.

At the beginning of the month I stated that my goal was to get three different quilts that I have underway to the quilt top stage and this will be first of the three. Of course, designing and adding a different border will take more time but I think I would be happier with the result and that is what it is all about.

There are still two weeks left in the month and I seriously don't think I will get all three to the ready-to-quilt stage but I sure will have fun trying!

More Blocks

I worked on completing the block centers yesterday and I just need one more. I held off on the last one because I am not sure if I am going to have enough of the fabric I want to use. Some of these sweater blocks are being made from stash fabric that is in larger pieces but some are being made from scrappy bits. Of course, the piece I want to use for the last block is smaller and I am already using it in another block so I need to finish that one first. I hope there is enough left over but if not that is okay too. I will just choose something else.

Even though all of the quilt block designs provided by Sew Fresh Quilts are just so cute I did substitute a pleated tree for one of the tree blocks that was designed by Lorna. I already had it made as a test for the tree block that I made for my Guild Pizza Box Exchange so I decided to include it in my quilt top. I really like it!

I have my Guild Executive meeting this morning but this afternoon I plan on turning some of these block centers into completed sweater blocks. My goal is to get this quilt top finished this month, as well as two others, and I am not sure how that will happen. Time is flying by - I can't believe that we are already almost half way through January!

Finally I did it!

I got my sewing room cleared up enough that I have room on my cutting tables, my sewing tables and my ironing space.

Whew...it was a big job and I am still not finished but it is good enough to be able to get some sewing done. If I keep at it a bit at a time I just may end up with a room that is perfectly tidy - but that's not really gonna happen. I will be happy if I can keep things under control. :)

So after all of that work I did make four little blocks. These are center sections for my Ugly Christmas Sweater quilt that Lorna from Sew Fresh Quilts did as a quilt-along. Of course, I got lost along the way and the quilt along finished without me but I have picked it up again.

10 completed blocks
The first block in the photo, Economy Patch, turned out 1/4" too small. Not sure how that happened and I don't know what I will do about it yet.

I already had 10 sweater blocks completed and I need 10 more for a 4 x 5 layout. I figured I would get all of the needed centers done and then I can just assembly line sew them all into the completed sweater blocks. My goal is to finish the other six center blocks tomorrow. We are expecting a lot of snow tomorrow so, at this point, I don't have any other commitments other than going on the treadmill so I just may get them done. :)

Every so often you see blog posts about very old quilts where the maker made a mistake and either didn't realize it or just carried on with the quilt regardless. Well, I just realized that I had one of my own!.

This is my quilt that I called Sapphire Bay and I finished it in February 2012. It is the Bonnie Hunter mystery quilt that she called Orca Bay.
This mistake has stayed well disguised for 5 years!
I was just standing in my family room and I was aimlessly watching something that caught my attention on the TV when I just happened to glance at this quilt hanging over the quilt rack. I had to take a second look to make sure I was seeing what was in front of my eyes.

This is the photo I took and posted when I finished the quilt. I didn't notice then but now I can see where I went awry with my piecing. :) Can you see it? It's on the left hand side second row.

Hee hee - this quilt gets used constantly on the couch in the family room and this is the first time I've noticed. Maybe it just wasn't obvious because the pattern is quite busy. I wonder if there are any other oopsies lurking just waiting to be discovered.

I now am the proud owner of one of 'those' quilts!

Pizza Box Challenge

I worked on my Pizza Box challenge block today and I think it turned out pretty cute even though it is a bit plain looking. I was hoping the pleats in the tree would provide enough jazz to make the block look interesting. I really like the pleated tree that I saw here when I was scouring the web looking for ideas that weren't too difficult. Last minute me needs to have it ready for Wednesday morning and I just don't think I will have enough time to work on it tomorrow.

The theme for this month's block is Christmas and there are already three blocks made by other participants in the box and they look so cute. I don't know if I am allowed to post photos of them but I will.
